Dr. Fiona Rorrison

MBChB Bachelor of Medicine (Glasgow)
FRNZCGP Fellow of the Royal NZ College of GPs

Fiona grew up in the Scottish Highlands, came to New Zealand in her early 20’s and fell in love with the place. She has worked in General Practice for over 20 years, mostly in Hawkes Bay, with extensive experience in a High Health Needs Practice and in Māori/Pasifika health. Fiona also spent over 10 years working in adolescent health and High School Clinics across the Hawkes Bay.

Fiona is trustworthy, non-judgemental and empathetic, and perhaps most importantly, thorough. Her fastidiousness and ability to keep up with the fast changing pace of medicine has allowed her to build and maintain good working relationships with allied healthcare providers, specialists and hospital doctors throughout New Zealand. Her conscientious approach ensures Fiona does everything she can reasonably do for her patient.

“You never know who will walk through your door, and often a patient presents with symptoms like a puzzle that you have to work through to come to a diagnosis – I love that challenge.”

Fiona is specifically interested in long term care – ‘the health journey’ – from preventative medicine, through diagnosis, investigation, treatment and ongoing care. She is highly skilled at chronic condition management with an interest in diabetes. Fiona really enjoys mental health and working with adolescents. A General Practice is the perfect environment for Fiona as it offers the variety she loves. She is really excited to provide a GP service to the locals in ‘QT’. A personalised style of General Practice with old fashioned values in a modern setting.

“Life doesn’t always turn out as planned, and I found myself a solo mother to five gorgeous children who needed me to be available. My doctor work provided us with the means to survive and for my kids to do all they wanted to but my career had to come second. Now they are older and I have more time for my professional growth and I am excited by the challenge and rewards that practice ownership will provide.”

Fiona still does the odd half marathon or marathon, enjoys biking, tramping, skiing and catching up with friends in the amazing restaurants and wineries Queenstown has to offer. Mostly she likes hanging out with her youngest boy at home, or other children when they visit.

Dr. Laura Brown

MBChB Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
DCH Diploma in Child Health
FRNZCGP Fellow of the Royal NZ College of GPs

Laura grew up in Southland and graduated from Otago University in 2005. She spent a few years in Auckland and Christchurch City Hospitals before moving to General Practice in 2012 and to Queenstown in 2017.

Laura enjoys all aspects of family medicine. She has completed extra training in child health and has a personal interest in women’s health.

Laura is especially excited about starting up a new practice to provide a welcoming, safe and inclusive environment. A place where you can feel comfortable seeking help. Where patients are invited to come and be an active part of the journey towards better health.

The traditional GP model in the sense of familiarity – knowing your doctor, nurse and receptionist – is where it’s at according to Laura. Excellent service means providing continuity of care and patient inclusiveness with communication between the practice and patients being paramount.

Outside of work Laura enjoys time with her wonderful family, getting out and about in the outdoors, skiing, biking and camping. She especially enjoys mountain biking, running, and the odd adventure race.

Dr. Rose Bruce

MBChB Bachelor of Medicine (Otago)
FRNZCGP Fellow of the Royal NZ College of GPs
Bachelor of Arts (Canterbury)

I was blindsided by medicine as a 19yr old, in a foreign war, in the heart of a rainforest helping the Kiwi doctor tend the Nicaragua Brigadista crew in the early 80s.  When I returned from my OE and finished my BA, I was a graduate entrant to Medical School and enjoyed leading the political charge to change the face of medicine.

I have worked as a police GP, and in psychiatry, pediatrics, urology, palliative care, oncology, obstetrics, urgent care, and rehab and spent many years on the front line as an Emergency doctor before I had twins and completed my GP fellowship. I am one of the last ‘generalists’ as from early days, we were placed in every department so I enjoy “all of medicine”.

I was born under Mt Hutt and grew up on a farm in Staveley, South Canterbury so despite years of surfing Taranaki, Indonesia, and Australia, the Alps are home. It’s literally been a life goal of mine to settle in Queenstown, and I cannot wait to meet our ‘village people’.

Your Friendly Medical Centre Team

DONOVAN

/ General Manager

Donovan is a South African-born New Zealander who has been living in Queenstown for the past 15 years. He completed his post-graduate studies across the disciplines of Clinical Neuropsychology, Business Administration, and Corporate Strategy in South Africa, prior to moving to New Zealand. He has worked in primary healthcare management for over 5 years, along with extensive corporate management experience both in New Zealand and abroad.

Donovan is passionate about patient care and views primary healthcare as a critical driver to tackling the inequalities that nationwide health is facing. Rural practice in this context adds a quality that is invaluable and is the substance that he supports and identifies with.

Donovan enjoys exercise and the outdoors. He especially loves spending time with his family and visiting the hidden treasures located all over New Zealand.

MEL

/ Reception

Mel has lived in Queenstown for most of her life and describes herself as being “just a few years off being born and bred”.

“Taking on my new vocation as a receptionist at the Village Medical Centre has allowed me to connect with my community. I like to greet everyone who walks through the door with a warm smile, and I enjoy welcoming patients into a safe, caring and supportive environment where I know that they will be respected and well looked after by our accomplished medical team.”

“I have a deep connection with nature, it’s my happy place. I feel very lucky to live near a crystal clear lake which I can paddle or swim in, mountains which I can ski down and hills which I can bike and walk in and around. I am grateful and proud to call the Whakatipu my home.”

MAIREAD

/ Reception

Mairead is originally from Ireland and has been living in Queenstown for the past 12 years. She loves the ‘kiwi way’ but, by her own admission, “still talks a little funny”!

“I am delighted to work in such a warm and genuinely caring practice with wonderful people.”

Outside of work, Mairead enjoys all of the beautiful walks that Queenstown has to offer and says, “I never get bored of the unbelievable scenery”. She also loves catching up with friends and sitting down to watch television with a cup of tea and some biscuits.

RACHEL

/ Reception

Rachel has lived in Arrowtown for the last 23 years – which is almost long enough to be called a ‘local’!

“I absolutely love everything about the Central Otago area, especially the lakes where I spend most of the summer with my family.”

“I feel very excited and lucky to have started working at The Village Medical Centre with the most amazing group of people. It will be wonderful to be able to assist those who live in the local community with their healthcare needs.”

In her spare time, Rachel loves coaching and watching her children in all of their sports and camping at Glendhu Bay.

KRISTEN

/ Practice Nurse

Kristen has lived in many different places throughout New Zealand and has also lived in Australia and Scandinavia. Kristen arrived in Queenstown in the spring of 2021. Her grandfather was born at Kyeburn Diggings and she was keen to return to her Central Otago roots.

Kristen is a Registered General and Obstetric Nurse who holds a post-graduate diploma in Advanced Nursing Practice, specialising in Oncology. Her career spans three decades, which Kristen says she finds hard to believe! The depth of Kristen’s experience stands her in good stead to offer the highest standard of care for the patients who come to the Village Medical Centre. In recent years Kristen has been involved in setting up infusion services in Christchurch, and prior to that, she spent 15 years in Sydney working in a busy day infusion chemotherapy clinic.

“I feel blessed to be able to live amongst such beauty, and I enjoy everything that the great outdoors has to offer.”

JILLIAN

/ Practice Nurse and Nursing Administration

Jillian grew up and lived in Invercargill until 3 years ago when she moved to Queenstown – her home away from home.

Jillian has worked in the Primary Health Care setting for many years across a number of clinical and management roles, specialising in Immunisation. “I am excited to be able to support the passionate team at The Village Medical Centre with nursing administration and relief nursing cover.”

“We moved to Queenstown in early 2020 for a change of life pace, and what a ride it has been, especially for me professionally. Now that things are settling down I hope to be able to achieve the work-life balance which I was ultimately after.”

RAYELEE

/ Practice Nurse

Rayelee is an experienced and well-travelled nurse from Australia who has found her home in Queenstown for the last 8 years.

She has been nursing for 12 years, starting with a post-grad in anaesthetics and peri-operative care, she has worked in remote nursing around Australia, emergency medicine, and for the last 3 years, primary health care.

She loves connecting with people and helping to find supportive ways to improve overall health for individuals and their families.

“I am excited to join the Village as I believe that the small team enables us to work together to provide the best personalised support for our patient’s health journey.”

SOPHIE

/ Health Coach | Community Support Worker

Sophie is originally from the United Kingdom and has been living in Queenstown for the past seven years.

While in the United Kingdom Sophie spent time working in both the mental health and wellbeing sectors, and she has spent the past two years working as a Phlebotomist here in Queenstown.

As a Health Coach, Sophie’s role is to help support patients to better understand their health and to empower them to make positive behaviour changes around their health and wellbeing. In her capacity as a Community Support Worker Sophie is able to take practical steps to help patients manage their health out in the community, including visiting patients at home, connecting them with groups/services which may be of interest to them, and even accompanying patients on their first visit to such groups/services in order to offer them support. Sophie works at The Village Medical Centre on Wednesdays and is able to offer free, 30 minute, appointments to patients who are referred to her by a GP or a nurse.

Outside of work, Sophie enjoys going on walks and exploring different parts of the South Island whenever she can. She also loves a good box set binge on Netflix!
